Vietnam wins ASEAN police football tourney

The Vietnamese police force hoisted the trophy at the ASEAN Police Open tournament Wednesday in Hanoi yesterday.
Eight Southeast Asian police squads from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China attended the 16-day event.
Vietnam were crowned the champions after edging Thailand 3-2 in the tense final game at Hanoi’s Hang Day stadium.
Tuan Thanh from Hanoi police was the game’s MVP after putting Vietnam over the top 3-2 in the last minute before the final whistle.
He also took Vietnam’s first goal and set up Bui Quang Hop for their second.
Thanh put his home side to a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the clash from a low shot near the box.
However, the Thais proved their strength five minutes later and equalized with a similar shot.
Vietnam went ahead 2-1 when Quang Hop took Thanh’s pass to the back of the net in the last minute of the first half.
But Thailand leveled thirty minutes later.
In the last minute of extra time, Tuan Thanh blasted home his second goal securing the title for his fiery squadron.
The champions were given a VND100 million (US$6,250) prize while Thailand received $5,000. Laos and Cambodia, the bronze medalists, each got $3,125.
Host Vietnam dominated with no losses or draws. They trounced Cambodia 8-0 in the semis while Thailand surpassed Laos 2-1. |
