Poisonous mushrooms kill four in Central Highlands

Four people have died and six others are in hospital in the Central Highlands province Kon Tum after eating poisonous mushrooms.
Y Huy, one of the patients being treated at the Kon Tum General Hospital, said Monday all six members of her family living in Muong Hoong
Commune had been hospitalized after eating wild mushrooms her father had picked in a nearby forest.
Her seven-year-old brother A Hao and 13-year-old sister Y Heo had complained about stomach pains and foamed at the mouth and vomited during the meal, she said.
The four others started having stomachaches not long after.
Hao and Heo died in hospital Saturday while Huy and another brother A Hiep are in hospital.
Their parents have been discharged.
Two other families in her commune too suffered from mushroom poisoning last week.
Residents said a couple, A Moi and Y Bin, had had serious stomachaches and vomited after eating wild mushrooms.
Only when health officials learnt about their case two days later and persuaded them to go to hospital did the two see a doctor.
But it was too late by then and they died at the Kon Tum General Hospital within a few days of each other.
A third family, Y Put’s, has four members now in hospital.
A woman in the family, Y Vung, said she had picked white and tasty-looking mushrooms in the mountain believing they were edible.
Kon Tum General Hospital director Nguyen Dinh Ty said Monday the two families suffering fatalities had eaten two different kinds of mushrooms that were yet to be identified. |
