One killed in football fan clash

A football fan of Vietnam’s top-flight V-League club Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) lost his life Sunday after he was hit by a bus carrying fans of the other team, Hai Phong, on its way to escape chase after a stadium melee.
Ten others were also injured and hospitalized after the fight, which erupted right after the end of the match of the two teams, which ended in a 1-1.
After being surrounded for almost 90 minutes inside the stadium by fan of the host team SLNA, Hai Phong fans were finally escorted by policemen to get aboard the bus to leave Vinh Stadium.
Running fast on the way home for fear of possible attacks by aggressive SLNA fans, the Hai Phong team bus hit a man who was identified as a fan of SLNA, named Ha Huy Thanh, 23 years old, said Trung Anh, a member of the fan club of SLNA, Monday.
Thanh was hit by the bus and then run over by a different vehicle, according to Trung Anh.
The Sunday melee was the second in Vinh Stadium within two months.
Earlier on April 14, fans of SLNA had also clashed with fans of The Cong after the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Nguyen Hai Huong, head of the disciplinary department of the Vietnam Football Federation, stated Monday he would impose a strict penalty against SLNA and the stadium. |
