Southern hub to spend over $300 mln on park

Ho Chi Minh City plans to invest VND5 trillion (US$309.4 million) to increase the amount of parks and green areas to 600 hectares by 2010.
Currently the city’s 113 parks and gardens cover only 230 hectares, one-fifth of the area allotted by zoners.
The city’s administration has also asked related agencies to reserve public land for the establishment of new parks in districts citywide.
The investors of industrial parks, zones for export and processing, residential and urban areas are required to reserve 30 percent of their land for parks and green areas.
It also regulated governmental offices, schools and hospitals to devote 20 percent of their land to tree planting.
HCMC currently has an average of only 0.6 square meters of parkland per citizen – ten times lower than regulated.
The Public Parks and Greenery Company under the HCMC Department of Transportation and Public Works has improved more than 100 municipal parks in the past few years. |
