Rice wine claims lives in Mekong Delta

Seven people have died after drinking home-made rice wine from a dog meat restaurant in Hau Giang Province, the province’s Health Department said Friday.
Eight people had fallen ill over the past 10 days after drinking the wine, which originated from a restaurant in Phung Hiep District’s Hoa An Commune, health department inspectors said.
The restaurant had supplied the fatal alcohol to retailers, where the victims had purchased the home-made rice wine.
The restaurant owner Thanh said he bought the rice wine for VND5,000 (US$0.31) a liter from a man from Can Tho City, identified only as Toan.
Thanh said he had been unable to reach Toan on his cell phone since the poisoning occurred.
Phung Hiep District’s Preventive Health Department officials and police raided the dog meat restaurant and seized 245 liters of the alcohol.
Samples of the rice wine have been sent for testing.
Relatives of the victims told inspectors about six to eight hours after drinking the rice wine the victims began vomiting and complaining of headaches and dizziness.
They died about eight hours after the onset of the symptoms, they said.
Phung Hiep District’s Preventive Health Department representative Nguyen Ngoc Thien said the latest victim died on the way to the hospital on May 6.
Can Tho General Hospital said three Phung Hiep men who were hospitalized on April 28 suffered low blood pressure and serious respiratory problems.
Huynh Duc Thang, 44, perished after checking into hospital and Tran Thanh Phong, 30, died two days in intensive care. |
